Sarah Gardner BA (Hons), FCA, CTA

Tax Manager, Dixcart International Limited

What I enjoy about my job
Tax is a fascinating area of work, which encompasses law, politics, sociology, psychology, maths, ethics and many other elements. Every day and every client brings a new set of challenges, which means that the job is always interesting!

How I ‘make it happen’ for my clients
I help companies and their owners to understand and plan for the tax consequences of commercial actions such as restructuring, expanding into new territories and buying and selling subsidiaries. I help companies to retain key staff by implementing share schemes and I also advise on tax reliefs including Research and Development tax credits.

A bit about my background
I trained in audit at a top 10 accountancy firm. Following qualification, I undertook a secondment to corporate tax for 6 months and then decided to move into tax permanently. I am a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser.

What I wish I’d known at the start of my career
No-one can know everything about tax! As a trainee and when newly qualified I was in awe of the knowledge that the Partners had, as they seemed to know the answer to everything technical. As I have progressed, I have realised that tax is such a broad area that no-one knows it all and the key skill is in recognising where there may be an issue needing further consideration.

You might not know this about me but…
I used to be a primary school teacher in a previous life!
